RUNESTONES: THE ANCIENT PLACE NAMES OF BASILDON

Basildon's history didn't begin in 1949. Through a series of eight hand-painted imaginary runestones, local artist Steve Lawes explores the area's Anglo-Saxon roots, uncovering the meanings behind place names that have survived for over a thousand years. From Vange and Laindon to Wickford and Lee Chapel, the work combines ancient lettering and imagery to reveal the history hiding beneath the New Town
